How to Start Tails OS from a USB Stick

Tails OS USB Stick

Tails is a privacy-focused operating system that runs from a USB stick. It helps reduce traces left on the computer you use.

Before you start

Back up your files. Keep the computer connected to power. Tails may not work with every computer, Wi-Fi card or graphics chip.

Start from the USB

  1. Turn the computer off.
  2. Insert the Tails USB stick.
  3. Turn the computer on and open its boot menu.
  4. Choose the USB device.
  5. Wait for the Tails welcome screen.

The boot-menu key is often F12, Escape, F9 or Option on a Mac. Check the computer maker’s guide if you are unsure.

Keep it updated

Install trusted Tails updates when they appear. A privacy tool lowers risk, but it cannot make unsafe actions safe or legal.
